Anyone who elects to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery is doing so withthe intent to get a result that is at least a bit closer to the image of the “perfect” nose they have in their head. But what does the perfect nose look like? Well, the answer is different for everyone, of course, but trends do exist, and NYU researchers recently set out to determine what people generally find attractive in noses for (specifically Caucasian) women when it comes to tip rotation and projection.
The science of attractiveness, facial symmetry, and balance, has naturally always been put to a mathematical formula, which is exactly what the NYU researchers used in setting up their study. Researchers collected a sample of side-profile photos taken of young, Caucasian women ages 18-24 with noses that ranged in tip rotation and projection of between 96 and 116 degrees. These images were shown to about 4,000 people similar in age to the women in the photos, with each participant voting on their opinion of the attractiveness of each nose.
The results of the study showed that the most universally attractive nose projection and rotation for the study participants was 106 degrees, with a slightly upturned tip. These results undoubtedly had influences from cultural and generational trends and preferences, along with celebrity culture and people’s personal perceptions about what constitutes an ideal nose. Currently, celebrities like Scarlett Johansson, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Kate Middleton all have nasal structures that people tend to admire and try to emulate through surgery. While trends and mathematical explanations do emerge from studies like these, the subject is still highly subjective, with a great many variables in play.
What Can Rhinoplasty Accomplish?
Rhinoplasty is an extremely versatile procedure that has ancient roots and a well-documented history of evolving techniques. Today, it is a procedure that is highly customized to each patient, with the goal of creating a natural, balanced appearance that is in harmony with the patient’s facial features and ethnic/cultural identity. Rhinoplasty can be used to build up or reduce the size of the nose, improve crookedness, remove a dorsal hump on the bridge, refine the nose and improve various aesthetic issues, reconstruct the nose following trauma, correct nasal deformities, and improve a number of breathing problems. Rhinoplasty cannot work miracles, but it can result in marked improvement of features that cause the patient low self-esteem, frustration, and/or breathing problems.
Skill and Dedication Required
Because rhinoplasty is such a versatile procedure and the nose is a complex feature, the surgery is quite difficult to perform successfully, and should be left to those with the experience, skill, artistry, dedication, and passion to excel in creating beautiful outcomes for a diverse patient base. Many surgeons offer rhinoplasty, but it is best to seek help only from board certified, expert rhinoplasty specialists who have spent years honing their skills. Rhinoplasty has a fairly high revision rate, so to increase your chances for a good outcome, you should do your research and choose your surgeon carefully. After you select a skilled surgeon, follow all pre- and post-operative instructions, and maintain realistic expectations for your results. If you do that, your chances for a good outcome are high.
